MELVIN SEALS & JGB

Melvin Seals has been a powerful presence in the music industry for over 30 years with a long-established reputation as a performer, recording artist and producer. Melvin is most revered for his powerful, high-spirited, Hammond B-3 organ and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years, and in doing so, helped pioneer and define what has now become "Jam Band Music". From blues to funk to rock to jazz, Melvin Seals serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and gospel thrown in to spice things up.

Melvin and JGB bring an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. The band includes John Kadlecik on lead guitar and vocal duties, John-Paul McLean's savory bass, Jeremy Hoenig on the drums and, of course, a heapin' helpin' of the Wizard's magic on Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous and high art where the sky is the limit musically. They offer an exciting, often psychedelic musical journey that changes nightly and keeps the audience dancing and smiling (and some staring in amazement) for hours. Adding his rock-gospel-soul-rhythm and blues touch with his funky style of playing, no wonder Jerry nicknamed him "Master of the Universe". These two shows will also feature Special Guest saxophonist Ron Holloway! Melvin continues to treat music lovers to his unique brand of melodic flavor with JGB. Come see and hear for yourself at the band's triumphant return to the wonderfully intimate and great-sounding 400-seat Café Istanbul!

Wil Blades – Hammond B-3

Donald Harrison Jr. – Sax

Mike Clark – Drums

Bill Summers – Percussion

Wil Blades

No less a jazz organ authority than the legendary Dr. Lonnie Smith has called Wil Blades “the future,” anointing him the heir apparent to “carry on the legend [and] the legacy of the organ, of the B-3.” Over the past fifteen years, Blades has grown to be one of the most in-demand organ players on the Bay Area scene. In addition to leading his own trio, he works regularly in duo situations with drummers Billy Martin (Medeski Martin and Wood) and Scott Amendola (Nels Cline Singers); and in trios led by guitarist Will Bernard and drummer Stanton Moore. He’s performed and recorded with a host of jazz and blues greats including John Scofield, Melvin Sparks, Idris Muhammad, Joe Louis Walker, Don Braden, Donald Harrison, Nicholas Payton, Karl Denson, Charlie Hunter, Jason Marsalis, Herlin Riley, and many others.

Donald Harrison Jr.

Donald Harrison Jr. has combined a whirlwind career as a saxophonist with establishing cultural and educational traditions in his native New Orleans, Louisiana. Known for creating nouveau swing, a jazz style that combines R&B, funk, hip-hop, and African dance, Harrison tours all over the world and has many albums and honors to his name. Yet he finds time to be Big Chief of Congo Square Nation in New Orleans for Mardi Gras season as well as being cofounder and artistic director of Tipitina's Foundation Internship Program to help New Orleans youth, especially the disadvantaged, realize their musical dreams.

Mike Clark

Drum virtuoso and jazz musician Mike Clark gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk drummers while playing with Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters in the early seventies. His incisive playing on Hancock’s “Actual Proof” garnered him an international cult following and influenced generations of drummers. His versatility led him to a two-year stint with Brand X, the British jazz/rock fusion band founded by Phil Collins. With them he recorded “Do They Hurt?” and “Product.” Mike is a co-leader with several other artists. “The Wolff and Clark Expedition 2,” with pianist Michael Wolff, was considered one of Downbeat's Top 25 releases in 2016. Along with Delbert Bump, he released "Retro Report," an organ trio CD, in April 2018. He continues to tour with the Headhunters.

Bill Summers

Percussionist Bill Summers has spent more than 30 years tracing the rhythmic links between Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas. In the 1970s, Summers was experimenting with ancient flutes when Herbie Hancock hired him for his legendary fusion group, the Headhunters. Later, Summers teamed up with Quincy Jones to create the score for Roots. As part of our series Musicians in Their Own Words, Summers describes how traditional rhythms can feel timeless, even when they come through an old TV set. Summers has been very busy in recent years. He and trumpeter Irvin Mayfield are the leaders of Los Hombres Calientes, a group formed in 1998 along with drummer Jason Marsalis. Their new CD, Carnival, explores the group's idea that New Orleans is the northernmost port of the Caribbean.

Tonight’s show features some of the heaviest heavyweights in musical history, and is a show you’re definitely not going to want to miss!

James Singleton

Bassist/composer/bandleader James Singleton was raised by a musician mother and began making music long before a time he can clearly recall. Based in New Orleans since New Year’s Day 1977 he has played with most of the biggest musical talents in names in town and collaborated with a wide spectrum of international artists as well. He continues his connection with the deepest traditions of New Orleans regularly, but has long shifted his emphasis to performing and recording his compositions: "In my music I concern myself with emotional depth first and foremost, but I want fresh sounds in a sense of narrative also. I need each piece to go somewhere, and for everyone to learn new things over repeat listenings. To this end, I surround myself with composers and players whose work I love."

Hot Eight Brass Band

Overview

Tickets: $25 Advance / $35 Door (if available)

HOT 8 BRASS BAND

Hot 8 Brass Band is a 2022 Grammy-winning New Orleans based brass band whose sound draws on the traditional jazz heritage of New Orleans alongside more modern styles including elements of funk, hip-hop, rap and its local variation, “bounce.”

Transcending genres and trends, Hot 8 have performed and collaborated with the likes of Jon Batiste, Blind Boys of Alabama, Basement Jaxx, Alice Russell and George Ezra, provided live support for Mos Def, Lauryn Hill and Mary J Blige, and have decade-long affiliations with actor/BBC 6 Music DJ Craig Charles, among other tastemakers, DJs and journalists around the world. Their second album The Life and Times Of... was nominated for a Grammy in 2013, and the band have since won a Grammy in 2022 for their work on ‘Album of the Year’ winner, Jon Batiste’s WE ARE. Further acclaimed releases such as Vicennial, On The Spot and Take Cover continue to exemplify their ability to honor their city’s musical traditions while forging their own powerful legacy.

Mixing an old school street brass approach with funkier currents and hip hop vocals, Hot 8’s magnificent originals are juxtaposed with fresh versions of Snoop Dogg, Stevie Wonder, The Specials, and of course their anthemic take on Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing”.

HISTORY OF HOT 8 BRASS BAND

Inspired early by the music of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Rebirth Brass Band, original bandleader Bennie Pete worked together with trombonist Jerome Jones and bass drummer Harry Cook to bring together members of two existing bands at Fortier High School - the Looney Tunes Brass Band and the High Steppers Brass Band – to form Hot 8 Brass Band in 1995. They gained local recognition playing on the streets of their hometown in Second Line Parades and at traditional Jazz funerals. Cutting their teeth by playing mainly pop/soul cover versions and traditional pieces, they also developed a repertoire of original material. The release of their first album Rock With The Hot 8 was impeded by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 as the lives of all band members were heavily impacted and the band’s career progression was put on hold. During this time, Bennie Pete and his bandmembers used their music to support and rally the displaced community, via various charity and community initiatives.

In 2007, multi-instrumentalist and producer Quantic picked up on Hot 8 Brass Band’s cover of “Sexual Healing”. Playing it live at a DJ set in New York, the track gained an unprecedented round of applause and Quantic sent it to Paul Jonas and Robert Luis at Tru Thoughts Records in Brighton, UK. The pair travelled to New Orleans with the intention of meeting and signing the band, beginning a long and ongoing partnership between band and label that started with a reissue of Rock With The Hot 8. The success of Rock With The Hot 8 – including the band’s renowned cover of “Sexual Healing” as well as the Snoop Dogg cover “What’s My Name (Rock With The Hot 8)” – paved the way for the band’s second album The Life & Times Of The Hot 8 Brass Band. Released in late 2012, the LP was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album. The first in a two-part set of albums, it was closely followed by sister release Tombstone in 2013.

Hot 8 Brass Band celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2015 with the release of Vicennial, featuring raucous cover versions and original numbers. This milestone release gained positive coverage from high profile publications including The Sunday Times, Independent On Sunday, Songlines and Metro. In 2017, Hot 8 Brass Band celebrated the live music of New Orleans, with a studio album that focused on capturing the spontaneous live energy of their street performances. Gaining the band further media recognition from The Guardian and The Australian, the release followed a sold-out show at London’s Roundhouse and an appearance at Glastonbury Festival. Their midday opening of the West Holts stage attracted the largest crowd in the stage’s history. They went on to play other large festivals and outdoor events including Fuji Rock, Roskilde and WOMAD.

At the House Of Common event in 2017, the band brought a taste of a New Orleans street party to London, leading thousands of revellers in a parade around Clapham Common. The procession was led by BBC presenter and DJ Craig Charles, a long-time fan and champion of the band. 2018 saw the release of Hot 8’s Take Cover EP, which featured their “Love Will Tear Us Apart” ode to New Orleans. Following this release, the band appeared on BBC 6Music’s Christmas Party, Jools Holland’s New Years Eve Hootenanny (alongside Nile Rogers, Michael Bublé, George Ezra and more), and shared a stage with George Ezra at the 2019 Brit Awards shortly after he won the award for British Male Solo Artist. Pre- covid, the band supported George Ezra on a mammoth European tour, before heading out on their Mardi Gras tour, selling out Brighton’s Dome and performing as part of BBC 6Music’s Festival.

HOT 8 BRASS BAND AND NEW ORLEANS

Hot 8 Brass Band’s rhythms are loose-limbed and hard-hitting, with most tracks featuring a sousaphone prominently. This frequently sets up and maintains short rhythmic and melodic grooves that dominate the band's recordings with rippling authority. The legendary group have established themselves as a dominant force on New Orleans streets—the band you want to dance behind during a Sunday second-line parade or witness jazz funeral. Brass band-related activities have been a vital part of New Orleans’ African American community life for over a century, serving as an important source of celebration, bonding, strength, pride, and both individual and collective expression. Jazz funerals are among the most curious and well-known New Orleans brass band customs. As an exercise of the belief in “rejoicing at death,” the jazz funeral juxtaposes grief and joy. Slow, sad hymns and dirges are played en route to the cemetery, followed by up-tempo songs and joyous second line dancing in a final procession away from the grave. The city’s traditional obsession with music, parades, dancing and the rise of black benevolent organizations has helped to maintain and support brass band activities and culture. Dozens of benevolent societies and groups known as “social aid & pleasure clubs” sponsor weekly Sunday parades. Very different from New Orleans’ better known Eurocentric Mardi Gras parades, the black social club events consist of three main parts: divisions of colorfully dressed social club members, one or more brass bands and the second line—a crowd of up to several thousand people who follow and dance alongside the parade throughout its several-hour duration. The free-form second line dance performed by club members and the crowd, both of whom dance with umbrellas and handkerchiefs, is derived from West African processions. The intensity that builds from the constant creative interaction between hot music and improvised dancing often erupts into a euphoric dimension in which a sense of total freedom, equality, limitless power, and a spiritual redefining of earthly reality seem to overtake all of the participants. Many legendary and influential musicians who would migrate from New Orleans by the 1920s and influence the direction of American music—among them King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, and Sidney Bechet—got some of their early training and experience in street parades and funerals.

The story of the Hot 8 Brass Band has been one of tragedy and triumph. Over the years the Hot 8’s ranks have been decimated by the deaths of four original members due to street violence and illness. The devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was a life-altering turning point; during which 80% of New Orleans flooded, untold numbers of inhabitants died, and long-term displacement and misery affected hundreds of thousands—raised real concerns about the survival of the city and its indigenous cultural traditions. After being evacuated, displaced, and scattered across the country, the band regrouped and began touring the United States to encourage and support other displaced Katrina victims and promote New Orleans’ recovery. Hot 8’s incredible tale, which comes across in their life-affirming and powerful music, has also previously featured in Spike Lee’s two New Orleans documentaries, When The Levees Broke and The Creek Don’t Rise, and David Simon’s HBO series Treme (in which the band played themselves), to add to extensive features across the world’s media.

Tonight's show offers music-lovers the incredible opportunity to experience the amazing Hot 8 Brass Band in Café Istanbul, a true gem of New Orlean's and one of its greatest-sounding and beautifully intimate venues. YEAH YOU RIGHT!!!

Axial Tilt

Overview

Tickets: $75 door, $65 advance

AXIAL TILT - A Grateful Dead Celebration in New Orleans!

The Grateful Dead is a true American original. Born in San Francisco in 1965 and still creating music in various forms more than 50 years later, the Grateful Dead represents the most successful example yet of a band blending both rock and jazz in a live format accessible to -- and loved by -- millions.

The band's now-legendary multi-hour forays into musical exploration via in-the-moment improvisation became a beacon for millions of Deadheads who traveled millions of miles to spend thousands of nights with the Grateful Dead, experiencing their one-of-a-kind sharing of energy between band and audience.

We believe it fitting to celebrate this truly unique American original in much the same way we celebrate some of this country's most beloved jazz artists, and to share the celebration with folks who appreciate the Grateful Dead's enduring musical legacy as much as they do those of the greatest musical artists New Orleans -- and the rest of the country -- has ever produced.

Happening at one of the most beautiful and intimate venues in New Orleans and featuring some of the most well-known names in the extended Grateful Dead family, AXIAL TILT is an all-out party in honor of the music, life, harmony, and spirit of togetherness inspired and personified by America's own Grateful Dead.

John "Papa" Gros Central City

Tickets: $35

Sharing New Orleans with the world is my calling.” - John “Papa” Gros

New Orleans has its fair share of musical ambassadors, but few are more rooted in the cracked sidewalks and popping speakers of the Crescent City than John “Papa” Gros. Born and raised in the city, Gros melds funk, rock, jazz, and blues to deliver a sound that is both innovative and unmistakably New Orleans.

Gros launched his career as a solo performer in the early 1990s, quickly gaining attention from marquee artists such as George Porter Jr. and Snooks Eaglin, both of whom brought him on board as a supporting musician. As he sat behind the keys, backing up some of the city’s most iconic musicians, he soaked in a lifetime of experience and continued to develop his craft. He released his solo debut, Day’s End, in 2004.

The next dozen years would be dedicated to leading and recording six albums with his band, Papa Grows Funk. He returned to solo work with 2016’s River’s On Fire and cemented his legacy as a part of the direct lineage of New Orleans music with 2020’s Central City. The complete self-portrait of John “Papa” Gros has been revealed.

In keeping with the energy and spirit the Big Easy is known for, Gros is a consummate live performer. His infectious band shows have been the highlight of festivals and venues across the U.S. and Europe, showcasing versatile musicianship, relentless grooves, and eclectic songcraft of the highest order.

Drawing on the full breadth and depth of his extensive catalog, Gros’ live performance marries style with substance, bringing that unique, can’t-put-your-finger-on-it magic of New Orleans and infusing the audience with a joyous energy few artists can match.

John “Papa” Gros is a bedrock New Orleans artist, a keyboardist, singer and songwriter who draws on funk, rhythm & blues and Americana songcraft; he also knows his way around the Mardi Gras music repertoire about as well as anyone. -The New Orleans Advocate.
